The Solventless Rosin Process
The solventless extraction process is a delicate balance of science and craftsmanship, designed to preserve the full-spectrum expression of the cannabis plant without the use of chemical solvents. Each step is intentional, from the initial harvest to the final press, ensuring that only the highest quality trichomes make it into the finished product. Below is a closer look at each stage of our solventless rosin process and workflow—highlighting how we transform fresh-frozen flower into premium live rosin through a clean, controlled, and carefully curated method.

1. Harvesting
All of the starting material for our solventless products begins with fresh frozen flower. We delicately remove the buds and freeze them within 20 minutes to ensure trichome preservation.

2. Washing
The frozen flower is placed into a water and ice bath. Next it undergoes gentle agitation to physically remove the trichome heads from the stalks. The water and material is filtered through “micron” bags that remove contaminants and also collect the desired water hash.

3. Pressing
After removing all the water via freeze driers, we prep the water hash to be made into rosin. This involves sifting the hash and filling the pressing bags. The bags filled are then placed on the rosin press where they see a small amount of heat and pressure creating rosin.

4. Processing
Some of our products like Cold Cure, Rosin Jam, and 2nd Press see additional processes after the initial press.
How Leiffa started
Solventless Innovation
No big investors. No fancy equipment. Just a tight-knit crew willing to get cold, wet, and gritty. We hauled ice by hand. Paddled fresh frozen with care. And when the right tools didn’t exist, we made our own.
Every setback pushed us to get more creative. Every batch was a chance to improve. We learned by doing, and by listening. To other makers. To our community. To the people actually smoking our hash.

Solventless for Everyone
Cannabis should be available to everyone, regardless of experience level. We offer solventless products that are easy to use, approachable, and cater to all lifestyles.
Frequently Asked Solventless Rosin Process Questions

General Concentrate Questions
What does solventless mean?
Solventless refers to cannabis extraction methods that do not use chemical solvents like butane, propane, or CO₂ to separate cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant. Instead, solventless extraction relies on mechanical techniques such as heat, pressure, and ice water to preserve the plant’s natural compounds. This process results in a concentrate, free from residual solvents.
What does “live” mean when we use it to describe cannabis concentrates?
In cannabis concentrates, “live” refers to products made from fresh-frozen cannabis rather than dried and cured flower. The plant is harvested and immediately frozen to preserve its natural terpene and cannabinoid profile before extraction. This process helps retain more flavor, aroma, and potency, resulting in a concentrate that closely reflects the fresh plant’s characteristics. Live concentrates, such as live rosin and live resin, are prized for their enhanced terpene content and full-spectrum effects.
Is live rosin a type of hash?
Yes, live rosin is a type of hash, but it undergoes an additional refinement process. Traditional hash or hashish is made by collecting and compressing trichomes, while live rosin starts as ice water hash (bubble hash) and is then pressed using heat and pressure to extract the live rosin concentrate.
How is live rosin different from live resin?
The key difference between live rosin and live resin is the extraction method.
Live rosin is a solventless concentrate made by first washing fresh-frozen cannabis in ice water to collect trichomes (bubble hash). This hash is then pressed using heat and pressure to extract a terpene-rich, full-spectrum concentrate.
Live resin, on the other hand, is made using solvent-based extraction with chemicals like butane or propane to strip cannabinoids and terpenes from fresh-frozen cannabis. The resulting extract is then purged to remove residual solvents.
Solventless Extraction Process Questions
What is ice water hash, and how does it relate to live rosin?
Ice water hash, or bubble hash, is made by washing cannabis in ice-cold water to separate trichomes from plant material. It’s the base material for live rosin, which is created by pressing high-quality ice water hash with heat and pressure to extract the solventless concentrate.
What does single-origin solventless mean? Is Leiffa single-origin?
Single-origin solventless means that the entire extraction process—from cultivation to final product—comes from the same source, ensuring full control over quality, genetics, and terpene preservation.
Yes, Leiffa is single-origin. Every step, from selecting and growing premium cannabis strains to producing ice water hash and pressing live rosin, is done in-house.
What does mixed micron mean? Are Leiffa products mixed-micron?
Mixed micron refers to a concentrate made by blending trichomes of various sizes, which are separated using different micron-sized screens during the extraction process. This approach captures a broader spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting in a more diverse and sometimes more potent product.
Leiffa concentrates are made using a mix of the cleanest and most desirable microns, carefully selected to deliver the best flavor and quality in every batch. We use mixed micron sizes because we believe this is the truest expression of the plant, capturing its full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes.
Why is fresh-frozen cannabis used in the live rosin process?
Fresh-frozen cannabis is used in the live rosin process to preserve the plant’s full terpene and cannabinoid profile. Freezing the cannabis immediately after harvest locks in the fresh, vibrant flavors and potent compounds that can be lost during the drying and curing process. This results in a more flavorful, aromatic, and potent concentrate, offering a true representation of the plant’s natural characteristics.
What is the role of ice in the washing process?
Ice is crucial in the washing process for extracting live rosin, as it helps to break off the trichomes from the cannabis plant material. When cannabis is agitated in ice-cold water, the cold temperature hardens the trichomes, making them brittle and easier to separate from the plant material. The ice also helps to create a slurry, allowing the trichomes to sink to the bottom while the plant material stays suspended, ensuring a cleaner and more efficient extraction.
What role does heat and pressure play in making live rosin?
Heat and pressure are essential in the live rosin extraction process. After ice water hash is made, it is placed in a press where controlled heat and pressure are applied to extract the concentrated oils from the trichomes
Solventless Consumption & Storage Questions
